Quarant Inc. is a group of former GCU students passionate about game development. The core of our team are three creators who loved collaborating during this year’s Global Game Jam. We invited a talented programmer, an animator and a freelance artist into our ranks resulting in a team handpicked for our concept. We are a diverse group with varied backgrounds and nationalities (British, Irish, Polish, Catalan, Serbian) ready to show a different take on the horror genre. Our goal is to reflect the diversity of our team by combating stale gaming tropes.
About the project
Alban: Dread by Darkness is set in an alternate history Scotland where fire doesn’t exist and Homo Sapiens are not the only humans. You play as the Protector of the last surviving settlement in the world. You start the game as the magic electricity which powers and protects the borough has been shut off and your goal is to find your way around in the darkness towards the 5 Giant Orbs on the outskirts, which allows you to then restore power and save everyone. In this 3rd-person terror game, you must balance your ‘attention’ level using either the focus or shine mechanics. While shining allows you to see better in the near-complete darkness, it raises your attention. If your attention rises fully, be prepared; the enemies in this game, the Homo Frigus, are difficult to defeat and can’t be killed – knocking out an enemy gives you only a short amount of time to escape the area. As you venture towards the Farm Tower, explore the buildings for narrative context about the unique world of Alban, and the dark history of the Borough of Picth. But remember, don’t draw too much attention, for the Frigus are listening…

About the project
Lateral Labs is a mind bending, 3D puzzle game where the player must guide robot in training D.R.U (Dispensing & Retrieval Unit) through a series of lab tests by manipulating blocks onto targets tiles. Blocks can be fired from the edge of the grid where they will travel until something blocks their path. However, blocks can also be retracted back towards DRU as long as nothing blocks his line of sight. Various combinations of obstacles such as teleport pads, buttons and directional pads help create energizing brain teasers that require smart thinking and careful planning to solve. Lateral Labs features an easy to use level editor that allows players to create their own brain busting puzzles to share with others, so that they might enjoy solving the tricky lab tests you’ve set out for them. Lateral Labs is suitable for all audiences and platforms and we hope everyone can find enjoyment in solving its many levels.

Define Logic Games
Local Hub: University of South Wales
Twitter: @DefineLogicUSW
Define Logic is a team of ambitious and very attractive Designers and Artists who, having recently graduated (mostly) from the University of South Wales, are ready to take on the world: one sub-par internet connection at a time.
Our team was assembled during our last two years at University, where we produced a medley of projects – big and small – but it was our recent success with Games Talent Wales that solidified our team as a force for game development good.
Tranzfuser will be a great opportunity to improve our skills as a team, which will prove invaluable as we start taking on contract work and further developing our project into a working prototype.
About the project
Project Roman is an episodic narrative-driven linear RPG set in South Wales during the time of the Roman conquest of Britain, and Boudica’s revolt in the east of England.
The story focuses around Rowan, a Celt-born adopted daughter of a Roman Centurion, who has been tasked by the spirits of Annwn – the Celtic underworld – to bring an end to the war between the Romans and Celts before a cataclysmic battle takes place.
We want to be accurate to the period’s history while prioritising telling a compelling story and featuring an engaging gameplay loop. We also want to bring in fantasy elements to the game, drawn from the period’s mythological beliefs and presented as if part of the natural world.
We are planning a PC release, though Console is being considered. We expect a 16+ and are targeting people who love ancient history or history in general, RPGs and historical fantasy.

About the project
Days Lost is a narrative based puzzle game set inside the diary of a young woman that takes you on an unusual journey of recovering the memories of days that she’s lost. The game is ultimately about empathy and learning to appreciate little moments of life. Living in a time when the world came to a standstill because of a pandemic, memories are a reminder that time passes, that things change. This game is an opportunity to slow down and go on a journey where we can reminisce, recreate and relive the memories of days lost. Days Lost puts the player in the shoes of Natalia, going through her diary to fill in the gaps of her memory. Solving each puzzle brings back some fragments of Natalia’s memory revealing the wider memories of the occasion not mentioned in her diary. Tying the puzzles together is a story told in a colourful diary style.

The whole is, in the words of some great thinker or other, greater than the sum of its parts. In our case, the parts met each other through friendships and connections formed during our time at university. Louise and Zach are London to the core. Finn found his way here all the way from Hobbiton (New Zealand) and Eimantas is from Lithuania. Though unified in our vision for the studio, we are quite different from one another. Each of us brings a unique set of skills and qualities to the table. Eimantas is cool and level-headed, a key player in times of crisis. Finn is the mad one (the “visionary”) with one foot planted in reality and the other gradually dissipating in a puddle of perpetual self-realization. Louise is the realist among us: quick-witted, down to earth, and exceptionally talented. And Zach… well Zach is Zach. He eats UV-maps for breakfast.

About the project
Anima is a third person, puzzle adventure game that combines exploration and creative puzzle solving.
In the game, the player will spend most of their time exploring dungeons, solving unique puzzles and collecting spirits to empower the player’s basic abilities. While most of the gameplay takes place inside dungeons, a world map could be used to help identify the locations of dungeons, treasures, secrets and side challenges.
Dungeons are divided into two sequential stages – Stage one is where the player unlocks a supernatural ability (passive or active) that can be used immediately upon collection (e.g. harness the Spirit of the Rhino to break through walls and use the Spirit of the Eagle to get a bird’s eye view of an area). Once the first stage is finished, players have the option to either progress to the second stage or depart. Stage two is optional however it rewards the player with a token. Tokens allow the player to literally summon animals into the world as companions. Direct control of these creatures grants the player direct movement of the animal and another use of the same signature ability. A token is only obtainable when the spirit’s ability is unlocked first.

Focusing on a co-op experience, Paranormal Panic requires a controller to play, allowing up to 4 people to join in on the fun to tackle the level together. Featuring a destructible environment, co-op capture mechanics and a graded scoring system, Paranormal Panic emphasises player interaction, allowing you to help or hinder your friends as you work to remove the ghouls haunting the town, each level culminating in a boss encounter with unique mechanics and challenges to overcome.
